1. Introduction to book of the Month, Story Writing & Drama Club

In our book of the month clubs, we select the top 20 students per school based on GROWBY scores and library readership levels. The Kannada teacher selects one book every month and distribute copies to all students to read. These students then fill questionnaires that seek their thoughts and opinions about the book. They also congregate every month to participate in the club meeting during which they participate first in a discussion around the book followed by 1:1 debates, character enactment, and attempts made to change the storyline.

In the last 3 years, our book of the month club has used famous plays (by Shakespeare and local writers such as Girish Karnad) so that it has segued nicely into a drama club in which the same students enact the plays with their own written scripts, as trained by the drama teacher.

In our story writing program intended to inspire creativity around the locally cultural milieu, students, the students from the book of the month and drama clubs write stories every month around theme such as justice, friendship, love and doubt. Students are taught to write stories using a structure around character building, themes, contexts, settings, conflicts/dilemmas, resolutions and twists. Students are asked to write stories from their own environment and develop characters around people they know and meet. Every alternate month, students also write stories in which the context is provided in detail and the students are asked to complete the story in a “what happens next” format.

ಪೀಠಿಕೆ
‘ಬುಕ್ ಆಪ್ ದ ಮಂಥ್’ಅಂದರೆ ತಿಂಗಳ ಉತ್ತಮ ಪುಸ್ತಕ. ಗ್ರೋಬಿ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆ ಮತ್ತು ಗ್ರಂಥಾಲಯದಲ್ಲಿನ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನು ಓದು ಹವ್ಯಾಸ ಬೆಳೆಸಿಕೊಂಡಿರುವ ಪ್ರತಿಭಾವಂತ ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನು ಗುರುತಿಸಿ ತಿಂಗಳ ಉತ್ತಮ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಸಂಘಕ್ಕೆ ಆಯ್ಕೆಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ಆಯ್ದ 20 ಮಕ್ಕಳ ತಂಡವಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಶಾಲಾ ಗ್ರಂಥಾಲಯದಲ್ಲಿನ ಆಯ್ದ ಒಂದೇ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಹಲವು ಪ್ರತಿಗಳಾಗಿ ಮಾಡಿ 20 ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಒಂದು ತಿಂಗಳ ಕಾಲಾವಧಿಗೆ ಓದಲು ಕೊಡುವುದು. ಆ ತಿಂಗಳ ಕೊನೆಯ ವಾರ ಅಥವಾ ದಿನದಂದು ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಒಂಡೆದೆ ಸೇರಿ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಲ್ಲಿನ ವಿಷಯ ವಸ್ತು, ಪಾತ್ರ, ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವ, ನೀತಿ, ಉತ್ತಮಾಂಶ, ಕ್ರೂರತೆ ಹೀಗೆ ಹಲವು ವಿಷಯಗಳಿಗೆ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಸಿದಂತೆ ಮಕ್ಕಳೇ ತಮ್ಮ ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯವನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಸುವರು ಮತ್ತು ಚರ್ಚಿಸುವರು. ಗುಂಪು ಚರ್ಚೆ ಹಾಗೂ ವಾಕ್ಚಾತುರ್ಯ ಉತ್ತೇಜಿಸುವ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮ ಇದಾಗಿದೆ.
ಕಳೆದ 3 ವರ್ಷಗಳಲ್ಲಿ, ನಮ್ಮ ತಿಂಗಳ ಕ್ಲಬ್ನ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ನಾಟಕಗಳನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ (ಷೇಕ್ಸ್ಪಿಯರ್ ಮತ್ತು ಗಿರೀಶ್ ಕಾರ್ನಾಡ್ ಅವರಂತಹ ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ಬರಹಗಾರರು). ಈ ಸಂಘದಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸುವ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಶೇಕ್ಸ್ಪಿಯರ್ ನಾಟಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಆಯ್ದ ಕೆಲವು ಹಾಸ್ಯ ಹಾಗೂ ದುರಂತ ನಾಟಕಗಳನ್ನು ಕಿರು ಹೊತ್ತಿಗೆ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ನೀಡಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಇವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ಚರ್ಚಿಸಿ ವಿಮರ್ಶೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅಲ್ಲದೇ ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರು ನೀಡುವ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಲಿಖಿತ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆದು ಸಲ್ಲಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನು ಓದುವ ಹವ್ಯಾಸ ಬೆಳೆಸಲು ಇದು ಸಹಾಯಕವಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಈ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ ತೊಡಗಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದರ ಮೂಲಕ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ತಮ್ಮ ಸುಪ್ತ ಪ್ರತಿಭೆಯನ್ನು ಪ್ರದರ್ಶಿಸಲು ಇದು ಸೂಕ್ತ ವೇದಿಕೆಯಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದು ಮಕ್ಕಳಲ್ಲಿ ಆತ್ಮಸ್ಥೈರ್ಯ ಹಾಗೂ ವಾಕ್ಚಾತುರ್ಯ ಉತ್ತೇಜಿಸುತ್ತಿದೆ.

3. Student Expectations

(a) Create folders: Before you start the year, create a folder on the desktop with your name. If you name is Ramesh Gowda, name the folder as “Ramesh Gowda”. Then create a sub-folder under this folder for each club you participate in. For Book of the Month Club, call this sub-folder “Book of the Month Club“. You will also need to maintain a record book with answers for each lesson. Please ask the program coordinator to provide you an empty record book at the beginning of the year.

(b) Read and use the timetable: Through the year, you should follow the timetable shown below. You should also also download the timetable by clicking on the link in the next section and save it on your desktop under the sub-folder “Book of the Month Club“. You should track this table on a weekly basis on your desktop as you complete the lessons one by one as per the timetable.

The timetable will tell you when you should go through each lesson (by week number starting from week 1) and how much time you have to go through the materials and submit the assignments for each lesson.

The year is made up of 40 weeks with a four week holiday for Diwali. In each week, you are expected to spend one hour going through the lesson material.

(c) Go through the lesson contents and get initial materials: Each lesson in the MLL club has a story and activities linked to a specific MLL. The lesson page will have the following sections that you should go through following the instructions below:

Introduction – You should read the text in this section about what the lesson is about
Lesson Book – In the section, you should click on the links provided to download the book that contains the play, and also a sample drams script related to the play (if available). Make sure to save the book and drama script in the sub-folder “Book of the Month Club” on your desktop.
Main Lesson Video – You should watch the video in this section in which our Book of the Month Club teacher conducts the lesson including reading the play and describing the play and activities associated with the play.
Activities: In this section, you can click on the link and download the debate questions related to the lesson. You should save this file in the “Book of the Month Club” sub-folder.
Quiz – In this section, you should download the quiz related to the lesson. Make sure to save the quiz in the sub-folder “Book of the Month Club” on your desktop.
Samples

(c) Perform activities and do the assignments

First go through all the materials related to the lesson on the lesson page (text, videos and links as define above) . This will take one hour of your time.
Then download the lesson book (with the play) and drama script (if available) and save it on your desktop under the “Book of the Month Club” sub-folder
If you need any materials to perform the activities (e.g. simple costumers to enact a mini-play), please ask the program coordinator for these materials.
Then perform the assignments related to the lesson You are then expected to spend at least 2-3 hours during the week doing the assignments and answering the quizzes.
For Plays:
1. You should first write down the debate questions and then write your answers to these questions in the record book. You should then take a scan image of the debate answers page using the webcam provided with the desktop as save it in JPEG format on your desktop under sub-folder “Book of the Month Club” with the name book_of_the_month_club_lesson_number_debates. For example, for lesson 1, you should name it as book_of_the_month_club_lesson_1_debates
2. You should then take a video of you enacting some key characters in the play in scenes selected by you. You can also enact out your answers to a few debate questions. You should record this video using the webcam provided with the desktop as save it in MP4 format on your desktop under the Book of the Month Club subfolder with the name book_of_the_month_club_lesson_number_video. For example, for lesson 1, you should name it as book_of_the_month_club_lesson_1_video. The video should not be more than 4 minutes long.
3. Then copy by hand the quiz that you downloaded to your lab record book. Answer the quiz questions in the lab record book under each question. Take a scan image of the answered quiz page using the webcam provided with the desktop as save it in JPEG format on your desktop under sub-folder “Book of the Month Club” with the name book_of_the_month_club_lesson_number_quiz. For example, for lesson 1, you should name it as book_of_the_month_club_lesson_1_quiz
For Story Writing:
1. You should write the story as per the themes provided in the lesson (please note that there are three story lessons in the timetable, each with a different theme that will be listed in the lesson page). Write the story in your record book using the techniques provided in the lesson page for the theme related to the lesson. The story should not be more than two pages (and not less that one page). Take a scan image of the story pages using the webcam provided with the desktop as save it in JPEG format on your desktop under sub-folder “Book of the Month Club” with the name book_of_the_month_club_lesson_number_story. For example, for lesson 1, you should name it as book_of_the_month_club_lesson_1_story

(d) Upload completed assignments: After you complete the activities and assignments, you should upload the saved files using the link “Manage Assignments and View Performance” — > “Book of the Month Club” in the main “Student Journey” page:

For Plays:
1. The scanned image of the debate question and answer pages (with file name book_of_the_month_club_lesson_number_debates.jpeg). Make sure you provide the Taluk name, HPS name and Lesson Number (to which the assignment belongs to) when you upload the file.
2. The scanned image of the answered quiz (with file name book_of_the_month_club_lesson_number_quiz.jpeg). Make sure you provide the Taluk name, HPS name and Lesson Number (to which the assignment belongs to) when you upload the file.
3. The video showing enaction of you debate answers and characters (with file name book_of_the_month_club_lesson_number_video.mp4). Make sure you provide the Taluk name, HPS name and Lesson Number (to which the assignment belongs to) when you upload the file.
For Stories:
1. The scanned images of the story pages (with file name book_of_the_month_club_lesson_number_story.jpeg). Make sure you provide the Taluk name, HPS name and Lesson Number (to which the assignment belongs to) when you upload the file.

(e) Update timetable: After you upload the assignments, make sure to update the timetable on your desktop under the folder “Book of the Month Club” by changing the green color of the lesson to brown. Now it is time for you to go to the next lesson online.

ಬುಕ್ ಆಫ್ ದ ಮಂಥ್ ಸಂಘದ ನಿರೀಕ್ಷೆಗಳು:

(ಬಿ) ವೇಳಾಪಟ್ಟಿಯಂತೆ ಕಲಿಯುವುದು:

ನಿಮಗೆ ನೀಡಲಾದ ವೇಳಾಪಟ್ಟಿಯು ಯಾವಾಗ ನೀವು ಪಾಠಗಳನ್ನು ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಮಾಡಬೇಕು ಮತ್ತು ಯಾವ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾವ ಪಾಠಗಳನ್ನು ಒಂದಾದ ಮೇಲೆ ಒಂದರಂತೆ ಕಲಿಯಬೇಕೆಂದು ತಿಳಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಕಲಿಯುವ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಮಗೆ ಬೇಕಾಗಬಹುದಾದ ಕಲಿಕಾ ಸಾಮಗ್ರಿಗಳನ್ನು ಸಹ ತಿಳಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಪ್ರತಿ ಪಾಠದ ಪ್ರಾಜೆಕ್ಟ್ /ನಿಯೋಜನೆ ಕಾರ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ವೇಳಾಪಟ್ಟಿ ನಿಮಗೆ ತಿಳಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

ಪ್ರತಿ ವರ್ಷದ ಅಕ್ಟೋಬರ್ ತಿಂಗಳಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮೂರು ವಾರಗಳ ದಸರಾ ರಜೆ/ದೀಪಾವಳಿ ರಜೆಗಳು ದೊರೆಯಬಹುದು. ಈ ರಜೆಗಳು ಸೇರಿದಂತೆ ಒಟ್ಟು 40 ವಾರಗಳು ಅಭ್ಯಾಸ ಮಾಡಲು ನಿಮಗೆ ಸಮಯ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಪ್ರತಿ ವಾರ ಒಂದು ಗಂಟೆ ಅವಧಿಯು ನಿಮಗೆ ಕಲಿಯಲು ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ.

(ಸಿ) ಪಾಠದ ವಿಷಯಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ಹೋಗಿ ಆರಂಭಿಕ ವಸ್ತುಗಳನ್ನು ಪಡೆಯಿರಿ:

ಬುಕ್ ಕ್ಲಬ್‌ನ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದು ಪಾಠವು ಒಂದು ನಿರ್ದಿಷ್ಟ ಕನಿಷ್ಠ ಕಲಿಕಾ ಮಟ್ಟಕ್ಕೆ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಸಿದ ಕಲಿಕಾ ಚಟುವಟಿಕೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದೆ. ಪ್ರತಿ ಪಾಠಗಳು ಈ ಕೆಳಗಿನ ವಿಭಾಗಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿರುತ್ತದೆ, ಕೆಳಗಿನ ಸೂಚನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಅನುಸರಿಸಿ ನೀವು ಕಲಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಮುಂದುವರೆಸಬೇಕು.
